The Night of San Juan is a celebration of religious origin that occurs between the night of June 23rd and the dawn of June 24th of each year. It is also known as the Feast of St. John or St. John’s Eve. The Night of San Juan is linked to the cult of the sun, the gathering of harvests, and the making of bonfires, which in ancient times symbolized a purifying element for our ancestors.
Throughout Spain, the festivity of San Juan has in common the burning of bonfires and the jumping over them for purification. In Malaga, it is also customary to burn dolls on the Night of San Juan, but these are called Júas, in Badajoz, the rag dolls are called Mastros.
In Monda, we have the tradition of holding a doll contest and then burning them in a big bonfire. You can enjoy this beautiful night if you stay at the Castillo de Monda.
